What Are Fleas?
Fleas are small in size, and are often mistaken for specks of dirt. Fleas' hard bodies are usually dark reddish-brown in color, and they are wingless. They use their powerful hind legs to jump to impressive heights and travel great distances. While most often associated with pet owners, fleas can become a problem on any property or inside any home.
Are fleas dangerous?
Fleas are considered a dangerous pest and should be eliminated from homes and other properties quickly. They can cause health problems in both people and animals. Many are allergic to fleas' saliva. Allergic reactions can trigger dermatitis, a severely itchy rash. This rash can become infected due to constant itching, resulting in constant scratching, and may require medical attention. Fleas can infect both people and pets with parasitic tapeworm. In addition, if pets develop a severe flea infestation they can become anemic.
Why do I have a flea problem?
Fleas are most often introduced onto properties and into yards by wild animals passing through. Once on your property, they will remain there until a new host passes by that they can attach themselves to and feed. Often the new host is your pet(s) who may then bring the fleas into your home. Fleas can also be introduced into homes on the clothing of people who unknowingly come into contact with fleas while spending time outside. Another common way that fleas find their way inside homes is on rodents or other wildlife that have found their way inside to nest. In addition, fleas can be brought into a home inside used furniture or on rugs that are infested with their eggs or larvae.
Where will I find fleas?
Fleas live outside in shady, sandy, moist areas. These areas include high grasses, under organic debris, or in the dirt underneath shrubs or bushes. Fleas that find their way inside can be found living on our pets and in the areas where they spend most of their time especially where pets sleep. Fleas also take up residence in the cracks of floors, in upholstered furniture, and in rugs.
